Losing memory can occur in a low voltage condition (like 4 or 5 VDC into the base), then the 0’s and 1’s are put in a “grey” state (where it's right in-between a binary zero or a one) and consequently the data gets corrupted. Surge protection cannot help this type of thing. You would have to consider a Line-interactive or On-Line UPS, if you wanted protection from low and high voltages. Please click on the image below:
